Ways To Access This Site

This website has a number of features to support accessibility for blind and vision impaired users, and users who prefer key access to using a mouse.

Features For Blind and Vision Impaired Users

To suit your own visual preferences (for example, to make text bigger), you can override most of the design features on this site.

See the "Help" section in your web browser, for instructions on how to change the font, font size, font colour, or background colours.

Screen Readers

We have designed this site so that it is highly usable for people with screen reading software. Each page is structured to be read in this order:

  • The page title in this format: Site title - Page title.
  • Main site-wide navigation.
  • Page heading.
  • Secondary navigation to pages within the same section.
  • Page content.
  • Page footer (About This Site / Contact Us / Feedback).

For those using a screen reader, following the page title on each page, are links to jump directly to the following main areas of each page:

  • The main navigation.
  • Page content At the end of each block of text on the page, are links to take you back to the navigation at the beginning of each page.

Keyboard Access

We have designed this website to be highly usable for those who prefer to use a keyboard instead of a mouse. All the pages on this site provide a consistent tab order, and permits keyboard users rapid access to areas of the site through the use of access keys.

Tab Order

For those navigating the site using a keyboard or keypad device, we have ensured there is a consistent tab order through each page.

Heading the tab order are four links, enabling users to move easily around the page. The links appear in the following order immediately after the title of the page:

  1. Go to the contents of this page.
  2. Go to links to other pages in this section.
  3. Go to main site-wide navigation.
  4. Go to links to site map, search and other sites.

After these four links, the tab order cycles through each page in the following order:

  1. Links within the main site-wide navigation.
  2. Links to other pages in the same section of the site.
  3. Links within the content of the page.

At the end of each of those groups of links, there is a link back to the top of the page.

Keyboard or keypad users can also bypass the tab order to directly access sections of the site by using access keys.

Access Keys

Access keys allow keyboard users to move directly to a link on the page.

To activate an access key, press Alt-Accesskey, then Enter to go to the page of the site listed below. Please note that some older browsers do not support access keys.
